Introducing A Secret Tool To Improve Employee Mental Health

Navigating the emotional and financial impact of Covid 19 on company and employees is no easy task. And we know that today, more than ever, employee mental health and wellness is a top concern for many company. After all, a happy employee is more motivated, energised and less likely to want to leave their job.

With this in mind, we’d like to suggest a unique intervention as part of your employee wellness scheme: Art lessons at My Art Space.

Before we explain how inspiring and enriching an experience like this can be, let’s take a moment to reflect on the stigma that surrounds mental health in Singapore.

Despite the fact that over half of the workforce experience everyday stress, only 10% are comfortable discussing mental health challenges. What would a majority rather do? Self-manage.

While digital apps and devices are a great way to do this, facing a blank canvas and creating something out of nothing is perhaps the most visceral form of self-management there is.

Here are a few ways in which art learning can help improve employee wellbeing:

1. It’s okay to not be okay

Mistakes. Make them at work and it could cost an employee their reputation or even their job. In art creation, however, mistakes are encouraged, even celebrated, because it shows the learner an opportunity to learn and grow.

2. Anyone can be creative

It’s a misconception that creativity is a niche skill. Anyone can be creative. For those that find this hard to apply in the workplace, trying it in a different context can be much more impactful. The confidence built while working on a canvas quietly creates space to be more creative in all aspects of life.

3. Enjoy the journey

There are no deadlines, there is no end goal, the only objective for any art student is to show up and be present. It’s an active form of meditation where learners can experience what it feels like to be in ‘the flow’. A feeling that can rescue those on the brink of burnout.

4. Be uniquely you:

Everyone is different. Some are more sensitive to colour, some to form. Art encourages learners to perform what they are good at, so they can focus on their strengths and not their weaknesses. The less they care about what others think, the better artists they can be. And eventually, better co-workers too.

5. Learn to let go:

When things aren’t going our way, we can get pretty stubborn and impatient. But this gets us nowhere. Be it at the workplace or in an art studio. The only difference is, when there’s less to lose, it can be easier to let go and trust the process.

While having a finished work of art to take home and hang on your wall may seem like the ultimate reward, the unseen benefits of learning to paint are priceless.

If this sounds like an avenue you’d like to explore for your employees, we’d be delighted to offer you special corporate packages for individuals, or for team bonding sessions.

You can even get in touch with us for bespoke events such as art excursions within Singapore and overseas, group exhibitions, art for charity, and more.
