Creating art pulls me toward what is beautiful and true about life.

About the Artist

Aimee Francesca, originally from the U.S. and moved from NYC to Singapore eleven years ago. I’m mom to an infant and a preschooler, as well as a volunteer adaptive exercise coach for people with autism. Previously, I worked as a writer for about fifteen years and also ran a fitness business here in Singapore.

How did you get started in creating art and how does it enrich your life?

I began creating visual art through divine intervention — that’s the best way to put it! I’d been trying to decide between two flexible vocations after my first child was born — returning to school for psychology or going back to writing for a living. What kept coming up was “PAINT.” After about six months of praying for discernment, I finally gave into the blank canvas in 2019 and have been painting ever since. Creating art pulls me toward what is beautiful and true about life. It is silence, contemplation, delight, connection, a gift from God.

Please share on your learning experience and what you like about My Art Space

I love the community at My Art Space, as well as the pristine light that filters through the windows of the main studio downstairs. The instructors are respectful of my process and experimentation. Chan Kerk will often say to me, “why don’t you try it and see what happens? You can always change it later.” Sometimes, that is exactly what I need to hear in order to move forward with a piece. It’s been a blessing to have My Art Space to go to when I’m ready to work on a larger painting or just want to see another friendly and inspired face during this strange time in history.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given about creating art?

“Make your art a priority.” Put studio time on the calendar, hire a nanny part-time, get up before the sun rises, quit Facebook, and do whatever else you can to carve out time and space to create. It was advice I’d received many, many years ago as a young writer. Self-discipline is key. On a highly practical level, another piece of advice I received when I began painting was, “learn how to draw well.” So important!

What's your favourite artwork?

It’s always changing. Anything by Henri Rousseau is at the top of the list, particularly “Surprised!” Russian artist Ivan Shishkin’s “Morning in a Pine Forest” is another.

What are you trying to communicate with your art?

Abundant evidence of the Great Creator within this astounding natural world, which has been entrusted to us. We are surrounded by miracles, and yet we forget how to see them.

Tell us what plans you have for your art future?

To create a body of work that celebrates the rainforests and creatures of Singapore while also capturing their fragility, and then to somehow use that work to promote nature conservation. With that said, painting feels like kismet. I’m going to really try not to get in the way of the process with my own narrow plans.
