MEMBER STORIES
The artistic process doesn’t always go well, sometimes I get frustrated but in the process I learn to free myself from my fears and self imposed expectations.

About the Artist
I’m Cindy, a Singaporean civil servant with the Singapore government.
How did you get started in creating art and how does it enrich your life?
I started actually with charcoal drawings, because I once saw a charcoal drawing of a dog at a charity art auction. I could not afford it, but I swore that I will learn to do my own charcoal drawings. So I started taking classes, and my first charcoal drawing was of my own dog. It is still my favourite piece of art ever. Then I moved on to oil painting, and now I go full circle to doing oil paintings of dogs. Somehow art and dogs – that combination – just makes me so happy.
Please share on your learning experience and what you like about My Art Space
I like the flexibility in the different times I can come in to the studio for my class. Sometimes I come in after work, sometimes on weekends. Each time I come, I feel like it allows me to take a break from the real world, and just immerse myself in a world I am creating with my art. The artistic process doesn’t always go well, sometimes I get frustrated but in the process I learn to free myself from my fears and self imposed expectations.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given about creating art?
Do not be afraid to destroy what you have created, or you learn nothing.
What's your favourite artwork?
This is too difficult to answer. I’ve been wowed by so many different artists, ranging from Monet to Banksy. But my favourite artwork (I am biased of course) is my charcoal drawing of my dog, Tae. 😀
What are you trying to communicate with your art?
Love. I’m right now doing a charity series of dog paintings, commissioned by their owners. In each painting, I want to convey the love and connection in the human-dog relationship.
Tell us what plans you have for your art future?
My charity dog series will take me till some time next year. After that, regardless what subject or art medium, I want to continue the theme of love, to continue to create art to convey what I love, for people I love.
