About the Artist
Good day! I am Michelle Lim Ming Siew, a born and bred Singaporean. I was a nurse for a large part of my career. Nursing exposed me to a fast pace environment and definitely allowed me to overcome lots of medical challenges. With that said, I am very family orientated and have decided to focus on that right now. I am proud to have a lovely family with two grown up daughters.
How did you get started in creating art and how does it enrich your life?
Designing, painting, drawing and envisioning colours have been my passion. Art was definitely my favourite subject in school. I savoured every single art lesson. To me, Art is part and parcel of my daily life.
I love coordinating colours, creating new design concepts and ideas. I express my creativity through my home decorations, choice of clothes and cooking. My aesthetic awareness is rooted within my daily living. Nonetheless, I still crave to be more creative. I try to stay open to learn anything new related to art!
Please share on your learning experience and what you like about My Art Space
It all started about three years ago, after my former art teacher in school (a local artist) invited a group of my colleagues and I to his house for a painting session. Through his encouragement, I started to realise it was time for me to engage in something new that I have always been keen on. As I looked around for art courses to attend, I found My Art Space!
The flexible learning schedules were suited to my preferences and the learning environment is conducive. I am always at ease whenever I am there for lessons. The course has allowed me to explore and create my art pieces. I gain in depth knowledge about colours mixing and a better understanding of how to create different strokes and various textures with different brushes. Overtime, I have developed a sharper eye at perceiving objects and have a better sense of proportion for my art pieces. Overall, the course is therapeutic and relaxing. It has been a great way to escape the stresses of day to day living. I would like to thank all the outstanding instructors that make classes pleasurable!
What's your favourite artwork?
Every art work is unique. It’s too hard to single out one piece in particular. Local artist Liu Kang’s “Life By The River”, “Forest Fire ” by Indonesian artist Raden Saleh, and French artist Claude Monet “The Magpie” are some of my favourite artworks. They represent the different concepts that I appreciate, from bright and discrete colour schemes to the use of light and shadows. Most importantly, all these pieces express different feelings and thoughts. We each can come to different interpretations from observing them, which I think shows the cerebral ambivalence I appreciate about art itself.
What are you trying to communicate with your art?
I believe art is a reflection of emotions. It helps to connect people through non verbal communication. With art, we can expose our feelings and be vulnerable. Most of my art pieces use bright colours. From primary colours of red, yellow and blue to secondary colours of green, orange even the intermediate colours like red-orange, blue-green. I hope my paintings can be a platform for people to feel some love, happiness and hope, as reflected through the bright colours. By embodying the beauty of nature through my lens, I wish to promote a more balanced outlook on life.
Tell us what plans you have for your art future?
Moving forward, I will continue to paint and hope to foster my passion for art. I aspire to put more of my personality, values, and beliefs into my work, to have my pieces embody me as a person. Eventually, I want to build a connection with a wider audience. Lastly, I hope all my art pieces will become a series of visual indulgence for others.
