"Art allow me to find stability in my life which is full of risks and unknown. As I paint, I become more appreciative and aware of my surroundings: light & shadow; shapes and form, color and value, of natural and created subjects."
About the Artist.
Derek Tien is my name. I was born in Taiwan, but lived and worked in USA, China, and Singapore. As vocation, I started off as an computer engineer but transitioned into finance and investment relating to the computing industry.
How do you get started in creating art and how does it enrich your life?
Art was my favorite subject in school. Due to busyness, I put aside art for 20 years during college and earlier stage of my career. Thankfully, I restarted oil painting when I turned 40, when I reached certain stability in life. Or I should say art allow me to find stability in my life which is full of risks and unknown. As I paint, I become more appreciative and aware of my surroundings: light & shadow; shapes and form, color and value, of natural and created subjects.
Please share on your learning experience and what you like about My Art Space.
Composition and color theory and variation of them taught by different instructors from My Art Space have been very helpful. I discovered that there is some parallel between painting and investment world. For example keys to good outcome should get the following three element correct: In Art world: composition - light & darkness - color. In Investment world: trends - good & bad companies - portfolio.
What's your favourite artwork?
They change: from impressionism, to realism, to hybrid of the two.
Hence as artists, they ranged from Passaro, Bouguereau, to 吴冠中 (Wu GuanZhong)
What are you trying to communicate with your art?
At this age and stage, I have not thought of communication but just enjoy painting and learning process and result. I painted from photos of places where I travelled with families. It is an efficient way to travel back in time and space. I also like to include life subjects (e.g. people and animals) into my paintings.
Tell us what plans you have for your art future?
Perhaps venture into work that emphasize more on creative fronts in terms of colors, forms, and subjects. Do more plein air painting if I can find the time and occasion. Perhaps go on one of the painting trips offered by My Art Space or good painting studios.
