Learning to paint has taught me much about life and about myself.

About the Artist

My name is Aarti. I moved to Singapore from Mumbai, India, 6 years ago. I work in advertising as a Creative Director and writer.

How did you get started in creating art and how does it enrich your life?

I’ve never had any formal training but since I was a child, I have loved to draw, paint and ‘make things’. I’ve always wanted formal training and finally joined My Art Space here in Singapore after more than 20 years of ‘thinking about joining something’. The moment I began class, I felt like I had found a missing piece. Learning to paint has taught me much about life and about myself. When I paint, it is meditation, everything else washes away.

Please share on your learning experience and what you like about My Art Space

Learning anything new is always a combination of anticipation, excitement and frustration. I’ve been attending class for almost 2 years now at My Art Space. I keep coming back because a) I love the space itself and b) the free flowing teaching methodology helps you learn without holding your hand.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given about creating art?

“Art is about learning how to see, not learning how to paint.” – Chankerk

What's your favourite artwork?

The Bedroom – by Vincent Van Gogh

What are you trying to communicate with your art?

My love for a kind of beauty that is not only seen but also deeply felt.

Tell us what plans you have for your art future?

Discovering ‘my style’. And learning how to paint portraits.
