About the Artist
Hi, I’m Vian Chan. A Singaporean, born, raised, and educated in Singapore. I graduated from NTU with a degree in accountancy and worked for a few years as an auditor/accountant before becoming a full-time mom for the past 17 years. I left Singapore in 1999 due to my husband’s job, and together with our family, we have stayed in several different countries before finally moving back home this year. I was fortunate enough to be able to learn painting from the local teachers whilst living in Taiwan, Korea and Jakarta. They each have their own distinct, unique style and they have helped to influence my personal style.
How did you get started in creating art and how does it enrich your life?
I don’t know what inspired me but whenever life permits, I will always put myself in hobby classes. It gives me great joy every time i start a new piece with a blank canvas. Its a fresh start and an adventure. I just start putting the paints and see where it will lead me. It gives me great satisfaction when a piece is completed. I love dogs, especially my own, and I hope that i can share that happiness through my paintings.
Please share on your learning experience and what you like about My Art Space
I started painting at My Art Space around 4 months ago. I love the philosophy here that art is not simply about copying the picture exactly, and is not something where you must master the basics before being adventurous and exploring new ways of painting. I do enjoy the challenge to try something different.
What's your favourite artwork?
My favourite artwork is The Bedroom by Vincent Van Gogh. I love his bold, expressive strokes, bright colours and the simplicity of the subject chosen, his humble room.
What are you trying to communicate with your art?
I would like to put a smile on the viewer’s face and warmth in their hearts. I hope they will appreciate the cuteness of dogs and just maybe fall in love with them too.
Tell us what plans you have for your art future?
Honestly, I have no plans for my future art pieces. My dogs are my source of inspiration now and I will just keep painting, enjoy it and see where it takes me.
